ABSTRACT

Urban governance is no longer a purely internal or local matter. Instead, it has become a question of global relevance. The adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015 are evidence of this development. In particular, SDG 11 with its ambition for cities to become inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable until the year 2030 points to the emerging international consensus that good urban governance has become a matter of global concern. This chapter situates the volume in the existing academic discourse, defines key concepts and notions and gives an overview of the structure of the volume.
