ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the doctrine of providence, within the context of traumatic incidents, from the perspective of evangelical practical theology. It focuses on the challenges attendant to the interpretation of events as divine providence, with particular focus on the purpose of providence to conform the people of God to the image of Christ and on the significance of unexpected, but beneficial, turns of events. The chapter concludes with a consideration of the place and role of compassion within an evangelical practical theology of providence.
