ABSTRACT
This chapter focuses on historical and contemporary examples of civic education and deliberative democracy efforts that put civil discourse at the center of that work. By looking at a number of examples from past, recent, and ongoing ventures, this chapter highlights the ways in which civil discourse can and should be encouraged as well as examples of how such efforts have failed—for structural, political, and/or cultural reasons.
