ABSTRACT

This chapter explores how workplace experiences among men and women in technology jobs vary at different ages. Drawing on a recent survey of technology workers, findings show that women of all ages perceive their technology work environments less positively compared to their peers of the same generation who are men. The same gender disparities in workplace experiences present for Generation X and Baby Boomer men and women in technology jobs remain for Millennials. Women are less likely than men to report the presence of a supportive manager, advancement and development opportunities, and manageable levels of stress, among other factors. Younger men report more positive experiences in technology jobs than older men as well, making younger men the group that reports the most positive experiences in technology jobs. Results highlight the need for employer actions to address the more negative work experiences that women of all ages and older men report in technology jobs so as to attract and retain a more diverse group of workers.
