ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews undergraduate research areas of dance science that investigate the physical, mental, and emotional aspects that impact the dancer’s body and performance. Examples from recent qualitative and quantitative studies will describe specific benefits of dance science research to dance instructors and students, including enhanced abilities in technique, performance, overall health and well-being. Topics include the evaluation of somatic education, exercise science, and biomechanics. These scientific devices have been shown to incorporate mindful movement, qualitative notation, wellness, training principle methods, physics/biological studies in quantitative movement notation and mechanical data analysis to influence dance training. Undergraduate students are encouraged to explore dance science research from a multidisciplinary approach.
