ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we explore the effectiveness of scientific online video according to the input of a group of experts, and we make a proposal of a classification of science video formats based on a content analysis. We constructed 18 video format categories and came to the conclusion that it is possible to distinguish between two broad types of video: television formats and web formats. The first group consists of online videos that are produced specifically for television, although they are also broadcast on the network. The second group consists of online video formats that are produced specifically to be broadcast on the Internet. The result is a preliminary classification to increase our understanding of the use of online videos as a tool to communicate science and the variety of formats that are being implemented.
