ABSTRACT

Politics has entered a period of transformation across the Anglosphere – with Donald Trump serving as metaphors for the way in which the old two-party centrist model appears to be coming under pressure. The resultant resentment and alienation, which built up amongst these disaffected citizens, is currently feeding the growth of a politics of cynicism and anger which eschews the politics of “the sensible centre”. Trump came along and broke the mould of consensual “sensible centre” politics. He refused to be spin-doctored. He refused to be deflected by polling. In 2016, the Anglosphere experienced two political events which shook the confidence of the beltway elites – namely Britain’s pro-Brexit vote and the election of Donald Trump as US president. Both challenged the comfortable centrist consensus of the beltway elites – effectively bursting the discursive bubble within which they were complacently residing.
