ABSTRACT

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has added the development of generic standards to improve the consistency of organizational and management systems. ISO 26000 provides guidance on how businesses and organizations can operate in a socially responsible way. The concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has gone through a significant development. Australian legislations such as the Protection of the Environment Operations Act 1997 and the Environmental Protection Act place rules and restrictions on what environmental modifications mining companies are allowed to make in order to extract ore. CSR must be implemented into every organizational level to have any meaningful impact. Truly, the majority of socially responsible practices are related to environmental issues and, therefore, there is a relationship between CSR and the application of environmental management systems. CSR, in fact, could mean different things, for example, provision of reliable products and services or being a good corporate citizen.
