ABSTRACT

The National Park Service (NPS) oversees the system of National Park units covering more than 95 million acres as well as numerous programs within the parks. The NPS also promotes stewardship of natural, historic, cultural and recreational resources outside of NPS units. The category of intellectual property also includes NPS units as an input to producing artwork, photographs, books, calendars, music, films, documentaries, commercials, and even music videos. The NPS administers a number of funding vehicles, such as the Land and Water Conservation Fund and the Historic Preservation Tax Incentives Program. The NPS manages the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training, which assists many groups, including communities, museums, universities, and state, local, and international park agencies, with the technical challenges of preserving historic properties. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
