ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the types of value that protected iconic landmarks and landscapes provide to the film and TV industry, and presents a methodology for estimating their economic contribution. It explores how National Park Service (NPS) units units are used in movies and TV shows. The chapter provides methods by which one could value in dollar terms, the contribution of an NPS unit to a movie or TV show. NPS units play important yet often overlooked roles in television and movie industry. In many ways, Hollywood is synonymous with entertainment - many use it interchangeably when referring to the movie and TV industry. The entertainment industry and labor unions use the Thirty Mile Zone studio zone to determine work rules and compensation for union workers in the film industry. One way to count movies and TV shows filmed throughout the National Park System is to examine a subset of the permits issued by the NPS units.
