ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses a key question: what are the framing strategies adopted by the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA)? It argues that the NDA and its framing strategies are shaped by similar socio-economic and political factors that influenced previous insurgents. The chapter explores the factors that led to the emergence of the NDA and focuses on how the Avengers conduct their three core framing tasks—diagnostic, prognostic and motivational. It explores the salience of scholarly attention to the framing strategies of insurgents. The chapter draws on David Snow and Robert Benford's theoretical schema to interrogate how the Avengers engage in core framing tasks vis-a-vis their battle against the Nigerian state. The Avengers' diagnostic framing of the problem in the Niger Delta is similar to how movement for the emancipation of Niger Delta (MEND) framed the problem. MEND holds four entities responsible for the problems in the Niger Delta.
