ABSTRACT

Reflections are offered on how the author’s professional approach to working collaboratively has developed throughout clinical psychology training. The term collaboration is discussed in relation to relevant research literature. Rooted in warmth, empathy and a person-centred approach, awareness of boundaries and consent are also key in developing effective working relationships which facilitate engagement and joint decision-making. Choice of therapeutic stance is discussed, considering uni-modal working versus integrative approaches. This chapter also discusses issues around power within a therapeutic relationship, and how the ownership of this becomes shared between client and psychologist.
