ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the issues inherent in clinical psychologists’ engagement with the benefits system, both in terms of the minutiae of completing applications for benefits with clients as well as wider, systemic considerations, such as campaigning for changes to oppressive welfare structures. The author offers a reflection on her own experiences in this area, particularly in transitioning from a role in mental health social work to qualifying as a clinical psychologist. Reflecting on how engaging with issues relating to the benefits system has influenced, and been influenced by, her professional identity, this chapter discusses how these issues may manifest directly and systemically in clinical psychology practice.
