ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a discourse particle (gima) whose meaning and functions seem to be similar (but not identical) to those of German unstressed ja. The core descriptive meaning associated with gima seems to be that the propositional content of the utterance is uncontroversial and accessible to both speaker and addressee. In addition, this particle may convey expressive content, particularly in exclamatory utterances, conveying the speaker’s surprise, annoyance, disapproval, etc.
