ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the nature of service employment and at its recent behaviour in national terms, before considering some of the main spatial concepts relevant to service location. It examines the light thrown by existing work on the behaviour of consumer services and producer services in relation to these concepts, in relation to the main trends in the location of manufacturing activity, and in relation to issues of current analytical or policy concern. The chapter shows that employment was growing fastest in a collection of consumer services and in the public-sector provision of health and education. It also shows that the concentration ratios for a selection of occupational groups. The chapter also explores Hannah–Kay indices to show the comparison of concentration of employment in service SIC Orders and in service occupational orders across the 126 Metropolitan Economic Labour Area between 1966 and 1971.
