ABSTRACT

The nature of this chapter is to reflect upon the fundamental role of emotional and spiritual education to achieve a sustainable development on our planet. The way we manage human training in higher education is reviewed to propose a multidimensional model. Most conventional theoretical models have reduced sustainable development to economic, social, and environmental dimensions. When emotional and spiritual dimensions are combined with a transdisciplinary methodology, the potential of a sustainability mindset emerges. While universal values have been claimed in many international events and conferences, the universal feelings have been forgotten as transcultural bridges for a paradigmatic shift. From an integral and complex perspective, this chapter combines inner-spiritual and outside-scientific knowledge to create a new epistemological vision on human training. Feeling-thinking-acting in harmony with the co-evolution processes of nature is the main goal of emotional, spiritual, and ecological literacy. As result of this “ecology of knowledge”, this seeks to promote a sustainable mindset from the heart-mind of each student/citizen. In conclusion, the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) led by the United Nations for 2030 are demanding a cosmodern consciousness, where science, culture, and spirituality are interlinked in the cosmos for a resilient and sustainable human development on Earth.
