ABSTRACT

The concepts of public media or public broadcasting usually refer to radio services provided by a State that sees it as its obligation to offer information for its citizens and spark conversations around national or global public issues. Public broadcasting is a concept intrinsically related to the notions of public interest and public good: the term public interest describes a whole range of informational benefits for all members of society. The original concept of public media as a public good was first put into practice in the United Kingdom and Northern Europe at the end of the 1920s. In the USA, the idea of a public media system stems from middle class and progressive sectors who experienced upward mobility and demanded better access to information. The perspectives of public media service in Latin America vary widely according to the historical and cultural particularities of each country.
