ABSTRACT

A convincing body of research suggests that strategies to engage parents as partners in youth education are critical to healthy development, building social-emotional competencies and skills, and promoting academic success. Establishing and strengthening family–school partnerships is essential to school psychology. An understanding of the theoretical frameworks that underlie family–school partnerships and guide the practice of these approaches is necessary. The purpose of this chapter is to describe theoretical frameworks that underline family–school partnerships. Applications to school psychology research and practice, and a case study are used to illustrate the use of the theoretical frameworks.
