ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of public relations practice in Bahrain and examines how emerging global patterns are influencing the functions of public relations in Bahrain and how the Bahraini socio-cultural background affects public relations practice in this context. The chapter develops a theoretical understanding of new directions of public relations theory in Bahrain in an age of rapid global communication. Moreover, the chapter relates Western public relations literature and theoretical concepts to the practice of the professional workforce in Bahrain by providing a critical insight and the implications of the development of public relations within the cultural context of Bahrain. Therefore, a socio-cultural approach is required to understand the influence of social customs, beliefs, values, language, and other factors on the evolution of public relations in Bahrain. The chapter provides valuable insight into the historical, cultural, social, and economic aspects of public relations in Bahrain. It also presents expert opinion regarding the practices and experiences of professional public relations practitioners in Bahrain, including academicians and practitioners who have contributed to the advancement of the discipline and practice. The chapter also attempts to evaluate current trends and to anticipate what this growing field will look like in the future.
