ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to help you understand what a personal development (PD) group is and its purpose. Jayne Godward looks at what you can expect when you start this process and what your role is in the group as a trainee. She looks at experiential learning in groups and how the PD group is different from a therapy group, while looking at its benefits.

The chapter aims to prepare you for beginning the PD group process and to look at how you can make the most of this. It is a practical chapter that gives case study examples and activities to help you to understand how this type of group works. There is also a section on what prevents trainees from participating and a look at how transactional analysis driver behaviours are played out in PD groups. Finally some useful group skills are identified.
