ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the particular role music psychotherapy has for the area of trauma. Theoretical approaches to music psychotherapeutic work are included in relation to musical processes within clinical improvisation, along with descriptions of the nature and impact of psychological trauma. As a further context, the author will also draw on the theoretical work of the psychoanalytic British Independents tradition. There is particular reference to aspects of temporality. Finally, there is consideration of the impact of trauma in parts of the world experiencing conflict, with exploration of a kind of “musical listening” that can help us to understand more of the experiences of those traumatised. The chapter is illustrated with examples from inside and outside the clinic room.
