ABSTRACT
What makes us the same organism over time? Discussions of this question regularly talk about fetuses, but rarely consider pregnancy. This chapter plugs the gap. It argues that mammalian fetuses are part of the maternal, gestating, organism. This parthood view raises questions about mammalian individuality during pregnancy. Discussions about biological identity in humans (and other placental mammals) need to take these questions into account.
