ABSTRACT

According to the vast literature on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), it is a multi-dimensional concept covering several aspects that are captured by numerous predefined indicators and sub-indicators. Yet, an evaluation cutting across countries based on a single scale does not seem to reflect the dimensions of the SDGs. Thus, this study suggests an econometric model – Factor Analysis (Principal Component) – to create indexes to be used as a comprehensive and unique evaluative measure of Korea’s past and future trajectory in achieving the SDGs. This chapter introduces and elaborates on the methodologies used in past research on SDGs, finding that very limited rigorous empirical analysis has been completed. Additionally, the book’s common methodology, as used for the analytical chapters, is explained both theoretically and practically through an example (a study on Seoul’s urban development).
