ABSTRACT

This chapter utilizes the ‘underserved population’ and ‘at-risk youth’ will be used synonymously. It explores a few different methods of digital art education that can be implemented with at-risk youth populations and provide some guidance on them. Gaining knowledge through critical making with both technology-based media and traditional media in a transmedia approach will enhance the student’s expression of themselves, while simultaneously giving educators insight into how best the student learns, communicates, and expresses themselves. These critical attributes are key to reaching at-risk youth and gaining momentum towards effectively providing the population with the tools necessary to move in a positive direction towards adulthood. Transmedia Art Education enables students to tell the many parts of their story building through the media they are motivated by, to effectively integrate the varied aspects of their lives. Transmedia can address a range of special needs issues and open up an enhanced form of communication and learning for students at-risk.
