ABSTRACT

In the course of the political crisis which followed the assassination of Franz Ferdinand on 28 June 1914 in Sarajevo, Germany declared war on Russia on the 1st of August 1914. One day later, German troops occupied Luxemburg and on the following day war was declared on France. When the United States of America finally entered the war in 1917, the conflict took on a global dimension. As a consequence, German soldiers were involved in military conflicts all over the world. This article aims at giving a compact overview on the songs that were produced for, and sometimes rearranged and sung by German soldiers during the First World War. Past research not available in English will be summarized, and supplemented with the author’s own work. Finally, future possible research concerning the topic will be suggested.
