ABSTRACT

Clients in individual or group therapy who have unwanted feelings that they want to release will benefit most from this experiential therapy. However, it is important not to force clients into a confrontation with negative emotions for which they are unready or to press them to release such emotions prematurely, before their purpose and meaning are considered. The therapist needs to assess the clients’ willingness to let go of these most unwanted feelings. This experiential therapy of re-decision or reaffirmation is most suited to a group setting as clients in a group share, learn and grow with one another. However, caution is to be exercised to ensure that clients are not coerced into encountering or releasing an unwanted feeling or embracing a desired one when they are not ready.
