ABSTRACT

The intention of this chapter is to synthesize three fields of research: drama therapy, sexual and gender identity and sexual orientation, and attachment theory. The primary research question asked is: How can having a LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer) sexual orientation or sexual or gender identity affect one’s attachment style in adulthood? Secondly, how can sexual orientation and sexual or gender identity and subsequent issues with attachment be addressed within the context of drama therapy? This chapter offers suggestions for the drama therapist that may be addressed in their practice, both with regard to attachment-related difficulties in adulthood, and those dealing with their gender and sexual identity and orientation. Suggestions include drama therapy exercises, theories, and weaving together possible intersections of these three fields of research. Areas for further study are addressed.
