ABSTRACT

Cities are made by migration and global history is, in fact, migration history. Port cities are, in this sense, relevant case studies, as these cities in history are characterised by mixed communities, and port cultures were shaped by migration patterns and conviviality, in particular on the waterfront. Port case studies show the relevance of using a historical-migration perspective in urban narratives (related to images and adaptation problems of migrants) and how these narratives still play a significant role in understanding the complexities of modern integration policies.
