ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of scholarly approaches to the topics of women and gender in early modern Spain. The chapter provides greater detail concerning two case studies of early modern Spanish women, Cecilia Morillas (1539–1581) in Salamanca and Madre Magdalena de San Jerónimo (1550s–1615s) in Madrid. These stories provide insight into women’s relationships to administrative management, strategy, and capacity. The chapter also works across numerous modes of documentation, including personal correspondence; institutional manuals; wills; family inventories; and literary texts, including poetry, theater, and prose.
