ABSTRACT
This chapter looks into the pragmatics of language contact asking the following questions: (1) For which pragmatic reasons do the speakers use the language which, as a consequence, undergoes contact-induced change, and for which pragmatic purposes does a new contact variety emerge? (2) What kind of consequences does code-switching as a pragmatic strategy in interaction have on the languages involved? (3) If pragmatics is the study of linguistic meaning-making in context, then which pragmatic needs are so pressing that the relevant structures of one language are copied into another language?
