ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the overall technological situation which independent Algeria inherited in greater detail. It presents the economic structure in 1962 and the importance of the petroleum sector. The chapter identifies the technological situation in agriculture and industry and take stock of education, training and the scientific and technical research situation. The Algerian economy was characterized by the high but decreasing importance of agriculture, the growth of the petroleum sector and all the weakness and disorder prevailing in the industrial economy, especially considering the importance of the building and public works (BPW) sector within the industry compared with the manufacturing industry. The evolution of the gross domestic product had been oriented towards the development of the non-agricultural economy within which the petroleum, BPW and service sectors occupied the lion's share, in conjunction with the recently launched housing programme and the increase of military expenditures.
