Gathering the work of creative writers and qualitative researchers who understand creative writing to be a method of inquiry, the essay argues that writing is a process of realization and a record of that discovery. It uses the embodied, evocative, partial and partisan, reflexive, and material criteria to point toward essays that are flat and those that are engaging. Included is a number of engaging writing examples from a range of scholars who work with qualitative inquiry.
