ABSTRACT

Palliative care services are expanding globally, and are present in some form in nearly 70% of the countries of the world. This has been charted through several global surveys. International collaborations are the basis for many of the developments in palliative care services, education, and research. Although resources in many countries are scarce, palliative care development is helped by local activism, community awareness, the availability of analgesia, education, and policy development, often supported by international partnerships. When these work well, they enable palliative care to develop according to local needs, and both partners gain valuable experience. For palliative care services to continue to develop globally, sustainable models need to develop and adapt to changing circumstances.
