ABSTRACT

Using two case studies, this chapter expands our understanding of how artists translate their knowledge and experience of practice to the learning environment of the art museum and how artist-led pedagogy is adopted and utilised by education staff in the gallery. The chapter outlines the history of artist-led pedagogy in galleries and its place in the museum today, before moving on to outline the knowledge and processes, motivations and role of the artist educator. This chapter considers how artistic ways of thinking and making underpin strands of museum-based pedagogy and identifies how and why working with artists offers a means to empower learners.
