The world’s population currently stands at more than 7 billion, and it is expected to reach 8.5 billion by the year 2025, causing a rise in global demand for food. It is estimated that to meet this demand, global food production needs to be increased by over 40% by 2030 and 70% by 2050 (FAO 2009). This poses a great challenge for agricultural scientists, because limited options exist for horizontal expansion. Vertical expansion is therefore the only choice for sustaining the needs of the growing population.
