ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how sport has generated redesigned contemporary options. The resulting niche sport examples include the development of canoe polo, ice marathons and kitesurfing. As the trend of adapting sport is expected to continue over time, predictions are offered concerning changes for the future of sport due to the impact of emerging technologies. Examples include that there will be a greater number of sub-categories of competitors in sport competitions; also, that the competition categories will be coordinated to offer a continuous flow of options from the Paralympic to Olympic level. Further, athletes will have to submit pre-event declarations concerning the multiple opportunities and competition categories for performance enhancing options, this includes elements such as 3D printed body parts and sports equipment. This lends itself to improving the reporting system, penalties and advanced pre-screening of sports equipment. The overall impacts resulting from the adaptations due to emerging technologies are positioned as requiring a greater number of systems and personnel to manage sport into the future.
