ABSTRACT

A synopsis of the emerging technologies presented in each of the previous chapters is offered. Importantly, the chapter also provides an overview of additional emerging technologies that may have an impact on sport in the future. The list includes blockchain technology, robotic technologies, age reversal technologies, implant technologies, bioelectrical signals as identification markers, space technology, fuel technology, brain technology and helmet technology. Also, it is proposed that many new technologies that will be developed cannot be conceived at this point in time, but will generate an impact on the future of sport. It is concluded that the number and types of responses required due to the impact of emerging technological innovations coming from multiple directions will hasten the pace of change within sport. Sport has shown an ability to adapt in the past, and this trend will continue. This does not mean, however, that all sports will be capable of adapting and ultimately surviving. A call for leadership is made to guide sport through the technological storm that is fast approaching. Also, it is noted that there is a role for undergraduate, graduate and faculty researchers to examine the implications of various strategies proposed for the future of sport. And finally, a guiding principle is proposed as a touchstone for all debate and development as it relates to the use of emerging technologies in sport: that athletes and their needs should be the priority and never be forgotten in the process of change.
