ABSTRACT

Sport is an increasingly important part of global culture. Museums are an increasingly significant way in which culture, through displays of material culture, is reflected and interpreted worldwide. How, then, is sport reflected in museums? Sport and museums are both aspects of our culture – but all too often sport is seen as ‘other’, not part of culture. In this environment, how far might we term the engagement between sports and museums as one of curious connections? This book addresses this question via a range of chapters that consider how sport and sport heritage is collected and displayed in several locations across the world. The focus is mainly on sport specific museums, but consideration is also given to the treatment of sport within more general museum contexts.
