ABSTRACT

The first chapter considered seven of the nine categories in the typology of the material culture of sport developed by Hardy et al (2009). In this second chapter I turn to the nine categories I have added to this, namely, oral and audio, film and media, music and dance, literature, including poetry and drama, the visual culture of sport (including what Hardy et al deem to be ephemera and detritus), virtual sport, animals, gambling, and collecting. As with the previous chapter, as I have already undertaken a detailed study of material culture in relation specifically to Association football (Moore, 2017), soccer is largely excluded from the following analysis. As with the previous chapter, the literature reviewed here is not definitive. So much has been published on sport’s material culture, both academically and more widely, that it is impossible to either consider or reference it all. I have focussed on those works that are the most useful to support my analysis.
