ABSTRACT

Capitalism produces and perpetuates social injustice. Since the 1800s, when Marx wrote about the social injustice caused by capitalism, there have been significant reformist efforts within the superstructure to provide support for all classes, races, and genders that experience social injustice. In 1982, Canada introduced a Charter of Human Rights as an addition to the Constitutions of 1867 and 1982. In 2008, the General Assembly at the UN also implemented the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. All aspects of applied theatre can aim to address social justice issues with a revolutionary approach. The goal of ending social injustice is a colossal undertaking, and one that theatre cannot do on its own.
