ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the leadership approaches in the health setting, which are necessary to facilitate transformation in healthcare to meet emerging population needs. Health services leadership and clinical supervision are integral processes in the healthcare context and both can be enriched by incorporating principles of interprofessional education and practice. Interprofessional models recognise that collaborative practice must focus on patient- or community-centred care: professionals should hold shared values and have interprofessional competencies which enable them to work together. The role of the patient, service user or client in the healthcare team continues to gather attention in health policy, practice literature. The strategic necessity to collaborate in looking at healthcare provision internationally, and the need for governance and leadership mechanisms to support collaboration across boundaries, are clearly recognised. The vital role of clinical supervision in the provision of safe and high-quality healthcare, as well as in supporting the healthcare professional, is being increasingly acknowledged.
