ABSTRACT

The end of the war and German Occupation of Guernsey marked a turning point in the delivery of hospital-based services and the subsequent education of nursing staff in Guernsey. The Bailiwick of Guernsey is populated by nearly 66,000 people, including those inhabiting the islands of Guernsey, Alderney, Sark, Herm, Brecqhou and Jethou. Guernsey is the largest island, spanning 24 square miles with a population of over 60,000. The partnership with Sheffield saw the first group of mental health and adult branch nurses graduating with a Diploma in Higher Education in 2003. The infrastructure supporting the delivery of health and social services on the island has several key differences when compared to the UK context. In terms of the provision of nurse education on the island, there will be continued competition with other sectors to attract the right candidates to undertake the pre-registration nursing programme.
