ABSTRACT

Despite dire warnings from scientists, the United States remains a laggard in global efforts to take on climate change. This is partly due to the influence of a powerful minority within the country that continues to deny the overwhelming scientific consensus about the causes of climate change and the need to act. The climate change denial by this small but influential minority is nurtured by a network of conservative funders, think tanks, and media organizations that intentionally try to question the scientific consensus and need for action. But the American climate change denial machine does not go unchallenged. After reviewing relevant literature on climate change denial, this chapter chronicles efforts by climate and environmental advocates to take on denialist campaigns. The chapter chronicles such efforts across the political spectrum, from environmentalists and progressive advocates to more conservative advocates who are trying to combat climate change denialism within their own ranks. Implications of their efforts are discussed.
