ABSTRACT

The author investigates ways to support and engage boys through the middle years of schooling. Boys can be easily misunderstood in an educational setting, and therefore they may be poorly supported. This chapter begins by providing some background material regarding the history of boys in schools, followed by what the literature says about the disengagement of boys in schooling. At that point, the author presents student perspectives about school engagement and what the literature says about the building of effective relationships between teachers and their male students. The author discusses the importance of adult men and women in boys’ lives, then outlines some of the educational programs and the learning styles of boys. Recommendations for practice are also provided.
