ABSTRACT

In this chapter, nine professionals share insights into their daily work and the disciplinary competences involved. The manager of an eco-packaging company discusses educating consumers and creating a zero-waste facility. A financial advisor explains how to advise businesses to balance their sustainable visions and financial goals. The ability of an artist to start dialogues and inspire action is illustrated through an award-winning writer/director whose work is informed by his conscience and experience of living in a multi-cultural society. A CPA working as an environmental manager at a multinational firm outlines how to implement environmental strategies based on the Triple Bottom Line. Readers learn from a product designer and CEO how to design alternatives to plastic from mushroom components using Cradle to Cradle principles. A dairy farmer recounts how he transitioned from conventional to organic farming, and a retired social worker volunteering for a child advocacy organization shows how critical standing up for the weak and lending them a voice is. Delivering societally relevant scientific knowledge based on the notion that humans are interconnected with the environment represents the competence of a medical researcher who explains how water insecurity and vector borne diseases are linked. The chapter concludes with an elementary teacher telling how she helps students discover and value their world while empowering them to act sustainably.
