ABSTRACT

Jane Marriott is unusually well qualified to discuss embassies in crisis having been faced with the need to arrange urgent embassy evacuations in not one but two countries: Iran and Yemen. Her chapter reviews the challenges involved. It ranges from the personal and professional (the rapid removal of key belongings, the safe disposal of sensitive information and the continuing representation of British interests) to the ethical (the protection of local ancillary staff and the safe evacuation of exposed personnel). The result is a frank account of the difficulties of keeping an embassy in operation in the face of violent local opposition.
