ABSTRACT

The geo-philosophical point of view – which is taken in this chapter – it is interesting to note that borders together with the indissoluble bond between politics and territory have gradually eroded after the decline of the State’s sovereignty, which is caused by the process of globalization. The cum-finis is a caesura, which creates two different spaces and at the same time establishes a connection between them in order to permit the passage from one to the other, even though they maintain their own difference. This “interregnum” the regressive nationalistic pressures, the requests for absolute territorial sovereignty and the claims of identity, which carry with them new and old racism and a widespread xenophobia, are bound to increase. It is essential to comprehend, without a sense of nostalgia, that the time of modern topo-politics and territorial sovereignty is over and, while the statehood continues to perform important functions.
