ABSTRACT

In developing managerial competency, must do more than ‘drive through the rearview mirror’. All across Europe, organizations in industry and education are seeking more reliable ways of identifying and developing the ‘competent manager’. Although these organizations vary in size and activity, they share one thing in common – a strong belief in the strategic importance of human knowledge. They recognize that their long-term competitiveness depends on their ability to develop fully and utilize the expertise and talent of all their members. The internationalization of markets is also causing businesses to review the type of managers they need. Many are looking for individuals who are capable of enabling people of different cultures to work effectively together. Often, the key to achieving this lies in the manager’s ability to combine an in-depth understanding of his or her cultural underpinnings with an openness to other cultures.
