ABSTRACT

Competence can be defined simply as a manager’s ability and willingness to perform a task. Such a definition is broadly compatible with most usages of the term. Managerial competences are best assessed by a process of informed and grounded judgement, by those who own and who are affected by the managerial action in question. This approach simply acknowledges the current reality of managerial practice and its assessment and suggests a realistic way for making it the basis for a rigorous process. The management world is clearly searching at the moment for an appropriate degree and form of professionalism. One of the general features of a professional code of conduct is its concern for its moral and ethical responsibilities to society, as well as for its technical efficiency and effectiveness. Teams work effectively on the basis of complementary combinations of competence, exercised in a spirit of goodwill and cooperation in groups and organizations.
