ABSTRACT
For 21st century educational systems around the world, the processes of globalization present a new host of challenges and opportunities for the promotion of citizenship education. At the same time, the need for an education for citizenship that has a global scope and is guided by critical and emancipatory approaches becomes more evident in the context of worrying global trends. Teacher education is the main pathway to ensure that changes are sustained over time for several generations. The ideas of global citizenship are still trying to find a place in the curricula despite the absence of a tradition in the educational system. It is pertinent to recognize that although teacher education programs have some degree of autonomy to determine their curricula, they are also heavily influenced by dominant discourses, government guidelines and educational policies and standards. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
